In certain applications involving polyphase induction motors, it is sometimes desirable to have available a means of braking the motors speed (e.g., an overhauling load). Unlike the DC motor in which the armature is disconnected from the line and connected across a resistor as a generator (as with the Hampden Model DB-100 Dynamic Braking Demonstrator), there is no way to disconnect the primary armature of an induction motor and still maintain excitation of the rotor secondary in the same manner.
