One pair Daven 100k Audio Taper Input Volume Gain Controls for Audiophile Tube amps or preampsThese were removed in the early 1980s from a 1950s RCA radio board, and have been in storage since then.Although the exterior is cosmetically rough, the innards are in great shape. [see pix]
They were designed for high impedance tubecircuits and function much like the simple carbon volume controls found in ordinary audio gear.But inside each can is a set of precision resistor networks, selected by the slider passing over the contacts. Gain is raised or lowered in precise 2db increments.These units were made to give totally consistent performance over decades of use.They were designedto be "bullet-proof"
Because of their high-impedance rating, these pots are just the thing for DIY Audiophile tube amplifiers or preamps.Not surprisingly, an NOS set of these sold for $350 on a vintage audiophile page a few years ago.
I cleaned them up a bit externally, and tested them with a digital ohm meter.After 70 years, they worked as precisely as when they were new.I then tested with an audio source. Unlike the carbon pots in contemporary analog equipment, these do not deteriorate or get "scratchy". If they do get dirty they can be easily cleaned by removing the cap and cleaning the contacts. Sure enough, they passed audio with no clicks, pops, or dropouts.
And they sound great!
Audiophiles have long recognized the differences in sound between types of wire, tubes, and other components, including controls. As a result, old technologies are much in demand because of how they sound. For home-brew audio gear, or other DIY projects where sound is important, these controls are an inexpensive way to attain world-class results.
Here's a quote from an audiophile web page on these pots:attenuation increases 2/db at a time (no detents), with a smooth taper to Infinity (on) to (off) on the last few steps. Action is firm and precise feeling,As with all vintage Daven, Shallco, Cinema and Tech Labs precision attenuators -- it's best to occasionally lubricate/clean again, to avoid any dirt before final install into your project (Daven controls are easily serviceable at anytime, even in-service by simply removing the rear cover, an unique feature of these overbuilt 1950s style commercial controls -- the quality of these is outstanding, meant to last forever with occasional cleaning). It has been many years since they left the factory and have been stored many, many years -- with simple and occasional cleaning these will return smooth, detailed audio performance to enjoy the rest of your life.
Note that although there are six lugs on each pot, these are single channel, monaural devices. The other three lugs are not used. These pots are connected just like the common carbon pots: one lug for input, one for output (the wiper), and one for common, or ground. If you have questions please contact me before buying.
