APPLICATIONCBN - cubic boron nitride - is the second hardest cutting material afterdiamond, and unlike diamond it is chemically stable against iron. That makesit the material for HARD TURNING: finishing hardened steels at roughly HRc45-65, bearing steels, case-hardened and through-hardened components, toolsteels and chilled cast iron.
Hard turning with CBN often replaces a grinding operation. A single turningpass can hold the tolerance and finish a grinder would produce, on a lathe,with far less cycle time and no coolant-flood grinding setup.
The specification here says finishing, not roughing. A 0.2 mm nose radius,a flat precision-ground rake face and the acute 35 degree V shape are forlight passes, tight contours and fine surface finish - the acute cornerreaches into profiles a square or 80 degree insert cannot.
