Kearney Corporation (founded in St. Louis, Missouri) was one of the premier manufacturers of these classic mid-century enclosed distribution cutouts.Notable Features of the Kearney "Chocolate Box" Cutout-The "Dropout" Indicator Door: Many vintage Kearney models featured a distinct mechanical safety design. When the internal fuse link melted or blew, the mechanism would unlatch the box’s heavy front door, causing it to drop open or hang down. This gave linemen an immediate, easy-to-spot visual indication from the ground that the fuse had cleared.-Material Composition: While earlier styles of enclosed cutouts from the 1920s used wood (often creosote-treated swamp cypress or walnut), Kearney perfected the classic heavy brown porcelain version that dominated utility lines through the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.-Lineman Operation: To service a blown fuse safely, a lineman would use an insulated hot stick to hook the door ring, pull down to isolate the internal fuse tube from the line contacts, and entirely remove the assembly.-Legacy: The James R. Kearney brand name became legendary for overcurrent protection, specifically for creating universal "Fit-All" fuse links. While the physical "chocolate boxes" are retired relics of old 4kV grids, the Kearney legacy lives on today under the Eaton umbrella, which still manufactures medium-voltage power distribution equipment.
