Vintage BULL STAFF The Louden Machinery Company safety bull staff was a specialized antique agricultural tool manufactured during the early-to-mid 20th century by the Louden Machinery Company of Fairfield, Iowa. It was designed to give farmers a secure and safe means of managing and leading potentially dangerous herd bulls by their nose rings.Key Specifications & MechanicsMaterials: Constructed from 1-1/16 inch outside diameter (O.D.) extra-heavy steel tubing paired with a durable malleable iron lock hook designed to withstand extreme structural strain.Dual-Control Operation: Built as a "safety" staff, the tool could be operated from two separate locations on the pole to maximize handler distance:To Hook: The handler pulled a slide ring located near the head of the staff, which opened the lock bolt to catch the bull's nose ring.To Release: The handler pulled a snap ring integrated into the rear handle, allowing them to release the bull from a distance of several feet.Purpose in early 20th-Century FarmingLeading a powerful bull by a flexible chain or rope alone allowed the animal to easily run over or charge its handler. A rigid steel pole locked firmly into the nose ring prevented the bull from getting any closer to the farmer than the exact length of the staff. It also allowed handlers to guide bulls or push them out of pens for feeding and cleaning without having to physically step inside the enclosure.Please see picks for part numbers cast into the pieces of the staff.
