Solenoids work as electromagnetic switches, serving as the link between the ignition and starter. The solenoid engages when the ignition key is turned, creating a link to allow for the flow of electricity to the starter. Once the engine starts, the solenoid disengages, cutting off the flow of electric. Solenoids have wire coils that wrap around a mobile core.
