Why won't this USB Solar Charging circuit work?

Postby MERITJW1 » Wed Apr 03, 2013 12:00 am

I'm trying to build yet another Solar Powered USB charging unit. Before I explain, I've done a search in this forum and could not find previous discussions on USB chargers using solar power.

When I hook my phone straight to one 6V solar panel through a female USB connector using nothing but the 5V positive prong and the ground prong, it will work, just not effectively. Then when I try to hook my phone up to the more complicated voltage regulated circuit, it will not work. I'm using three 6V solar panels hooked up in series. I've also tried 2 panels parallel 1 series, and 2 series 1 parallel and still no luck. When I hook up D-cell batteries to the circuit as the power source, it works fine though. When I measure the voltage at the regulator output while using the solar panels, i'm getting about 4.7-4.9V regardless of how many solar panels I hook up. I'm able to get 17V out of the panels and into the voltage regulator (with no load).

I've attached the schematic I drew in paint. If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, or have any suggestions, please let me know.

Itried giving you a link but it does not work.

According to the image - I Googled USB Charger Diagram - You are missing two resistors.
Their circuit indicates 39k/27k in series between the + and - : A second pair 22k/27K also connect to the + and - supply rails.

The 39 and 22K's are connected to the + (Plus)
The 27K's are connected to - (minus)
The junction of the 39K/27K pair goes to D+
The junction of the 22K/27K pair goes to D-

I would also like to suggest that you use a 47 Mfd on either the unregulated or regulated side of the 7805.
