problem with a 4001 IC

I am building a very simple piano/organy circuit using a 4001 IC. The schematic that I am using doesn't have a power LED indicator or a power switch. So I added them anyway.

I connected the positive of the battery to a SPST switch. Then positive to a 470 ohm resistor to the LED, Then also the main circuit. Than negative of the LED to the negative of battery.

Now the problem I am having is that when I turn it on and press the buttons sometimes a tone comes out of the speaker, sometimes it doesn't, some times it fades away, also sometimes the LED turns off completly, and sometimes the LED fades.

My 4001 is in a socket so if it's broken I could easily replace it. What do you think is the 4001 at fault?

I checked all my solder points and everything looks good.

It is not possible to diagnose the problem unless you supply a circuit.

Excelent. How would I go about suppliing a current? I am using a 9v Battery.

If you get a tone and it fades out and your LED fades out then it sounds more like a voltage supply problem.

Switch the unit on and start doing some tests. Measure the voltage at the battery leads where they join the board. If that reads 9V OK, then measure the voltage between pins 7 & 14 of the 4001. Let us know when you have the results.
