US AC Adapter to AU AC Adapter

Input: AC 120V 60Hz 54mA
Output: AC 12v 250mA Max 3W

My dad says if I get a US to AU plug converter it will just blow the device up and says I need
to buy an identical cord for output that's AU. If so what would I get ?

I'm assuming you're living in a 240V AC country. if so, then your dad is correct. It will blow the device up.
You're going to need a step-down transformer, something similar to the link below:

It might be best to shop around for better prices, though 45 bucks Aussie dollars isn't too bad.

The specified input of '125VAC' shows that it uses a mains transformer and as Relayer said it will blow up on a 240V supply.

A better bet would be a switch mode power supply (SMPS). These normally have an input voltage range that spans both of those voltages. Commonly known as 'wall warts' they are cheap and efficient, and there are hundreds on ebay.
