Calculating Capacitance

On a schematic, would caps in series always be directly in front and behind of each other?

It depends on what you mean by 'schematic'. If it is a 'schematic layout', ie. a component layout and wiring diagram, then they would be shown as two capacitors - and they could be placed anywhere on the board. But if you mean a circuit diagram - ie. a 'circuit', Then they would almost certainly be shown as one component of the equivalent value, with a note on the circuit stating that the component was made from two capacitors.
