needing help with a circuit

Postby hthuecks » Thu Jan 16, 2014 11:16 pm

I'm trying to make a circuit that runs a dc motor (6volt) for about 3-5 seconds in a forward position stop and then 3-5 seconds in a reverse position. Then start back up in 60seconds to start the cycle all over again, until I turn the circuit of with a switch. Looking for it to run for about 3-5 hours. Thanks hope to hear from someone soon.

Do the forwards and reverse times have to be accurately matched?

No they don't but it just has to move forward for a few seconds and then reverse for a few seconds

A suitable circuit would use, mainly, 2 x ICs, 2 x relays, and 2 x transistors.
Could you make it up OK?

I have never done anything like this and have no idea what anything is. If you could draw me up a circuit I could have someone make me one I guess.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

Do you know someone who could program a PIC microcontroller for you if I gave you the program? That would do a much better job.

If not I'll draw up a circuit for you.

OK. Here is a suitable circuit. You should be able to make it up on about 40mm x 40mm of stripboard.

The CD4017 is a CMOS device so don't solder on to it directly - use an 16pin IC holder and leave all unused pins unconnected.

Ideally, use a tantalum bead type for the 10µF capacitor.

Best of luck

Hey pebe can this circuit run a 3volt watch battery, also could I put a diode or a dial in to slow the motor down due to the rpms. Also thinking if the times can be changed from 4sec forward and reverse to maybe 1sec forward and reverse.

The circuit will not run on a 3V watch battery because the 555 requires at least a 4.5V supply. Also there is not enough energy in a watch battery to run a motor.

Putting a resistor in series with a motor will reduce its speed but will not control it. You would need pulse width modulation for it to be effective.

The 470K resistor connected to pins2, 6, and 7 of the 555 controls the motor run time. A value of 100K would be about right for a 1sec run.

Where can I purchase this stuff, and who do you recommend to make this for me?

I live in the UK and get stuff from here. 1st class service.

I don't know where you live so cannot suggest anyone local to you.

I thought you were going to get someone to make it up.
I don't know of anyone who can, but maybe a member here may be able to help you
