Need help to do bicycle lights

Postby RavenXCross » Sun Jul 28, 2013 8:56 pm

I want to run two of these...

off of one control switch.

What do I do to raise the voltage?

I ask this, because I don't want to burn out the controller, due to the batteries being stored in the light modules.

Greetings, Each of those items would require the same voltage and will run off 2AA batteries. I don't think you would want to raise the volts. You might hook 4 batteries parallel, if there is room to store them, and have the same voltage with more depth.

You just posted your question today. Let's see what the pros on the forum have to say.
Good luck with your project.

Can I do that without burning out the controls?

That's really my main concern.

The lights would be fine due to them requiring 2 AA's, but I want to make sure the controller itself can handle the 4 AA voltage.

It's not clear from the photos how the switching is done. Presumably left and right indicators can be selected as well as the red light turned on. Yet there only appears to be a 2core cable leading to the switch. Can you describe the switch action?

I think it's a three way switch. Push it left to activate left lights, right for right lights, and middle for off.

The brake lights are activated by a plunger type switch that your brake cable slips through. You pull the brake, and the lights are activated.

I want to have one light module in the front and one in the back.

I would be disabling the brake light in front, but that's a separate function.

It won't be difficult. But will you first check that on each lamp no switch contacts are being made when the turn indicators are not used?

I have a feeling that the current goes from the batteries, up to the switch, then down another wire either left or right and they blink. I don't know yet whether it's a 555 timer that makes them blink, or whether they've put something proprietary in.

One picture is worth a thousand words. Wire up the 5 points as shown in the drawing.
Either switch will then work both lamps. You can leave out one set of batteries if you like.
