The output of the tablet is for small speakers in headphones You need an amplifier between the tablet and the speakers.

Are you referring to speakers in a car, attached to the car's audio system, or speaker from a car?
What make/mdel is your tablet?

Here is a small amp that should work for you. We got a bunch of them for a student lab: [url]http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007TUSXEY/ref=pe_385040_30332190_pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_2[/url
It needs a wall wart for power. This is not the exact one we have, but Amazon lists it together with the amp: http://www.amazon.com/JACKYLED-Power-Supply-Adapter-110V/dp/B006NTNGN0/ref=pd_bxgy_422_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1X5NA0A4E0RMY1DGAXYE

By connecting the iPad "directly to the speakers", do you want to also have the speakers disconnected from the car's audio system when you connect the iPad? You can't just parallel an iPad+amplifier to the car's speakers with the car's audio system still connected to them.
If the car's audio system has an FM radio, there is an alternative approach:
Google: iPad to car FM

You should make use of an amplifier. Or otherwise try to connect your tablet to the speaker through another single input cable.
