People counter circuit help please

Hi all

I seem to have hit a dead end and thought I should seek out help.

I'm currently in the process of creating a university project that keeps track of the number of people entering and exiting a room.

I'm using 2 d-flip flops for the direction, 2 decade up down counters, 2 bcd to 7 segment decoders and 2 7 segment leds.
The use of microcontrollers are prohibited.

I am extremely close to simulating but I am not obtaining the expected results. If you are willing to help I will forward you my multisim files. I cannot post them here since I fear other students from the university will use my ideas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
