design help for a old problem

Postby ronb11 » Wed Dec 05, 2012 2:31 pm

Hi, my names Ron and I am new to this forum and looked it up to see if I might get some practical advise on a simple problem that I am trying to resolve.
The problem involves condensation buildup on the inside of my residential windows due to inadequate air circulation over the window area. A brief bit of info before I continue, we do not have forced air ducts or return air grills. The home is heated with a natural gas fireplace, vaulted ceilings with fans, 1000 sq.ft,
windows are fairly new, argon filled.
The idea I have in mind is to construct a device similar in design to a hair dryer. A low voltage fan (variable rpm) installed in a tube or case that will also contain a heating element. This unit would then be able to deliver a small, quiet warm air flow over the window surface that should reduce condensation on the window to a degree.
Has any one heard of a device that can do this ? Any suggestions or ideas as to whether or not this might work? I have a bit of experience in electronic design and electrical circuits as well as a machining background. It would be really great to hear what you all have to say!!! Thanks

Hi Ron,
I don't understand why you have posted your question here, in an electronics forum, when your problem is a physical one and could have been better dealt with in a DIY forum such as this:
http://www.diybanter.com/

That said, it would appear, especially with double glazed windows, that the room suffers from an excess of humidity that could be helped with just a fan to give better circulation. But with an open hearth gas fire have you got an adequate supply of outside air coming in through a proper vent? If not there could be a build-up of carbon monoxide, and that is dangerous.

Caution. blowing or heating away the condensation will waste tremendous energy.

Lowering humidity or improving the insulation of the windows (such as covering them with a sheet of plastic - Scotch makes temporary storm windows for such, you tape them around the edges and use a hair dryer to shrink them to be tight and smooth.

Sorry for replying to a Q in the wrong forum. I suggest (1) good paint on the bottom of the window (waterproof) so it doesn't hurt the wood, and thus "live with it"; if you don't want to do something active to lower the humidity or increase the insulation.
