This series of calculators has all the functionality of Hewlett-Packard devices without any bulkiness or front covers that get in the way. As far as battery use, it uses AAAs, so recharging this advanced calculator isn't difficult.The HP 48G calculator was first introduced in 1990 and was produced until 2003. This calculator features a copyright Saturn 1LT8 core processor that works on a memory clock frequency of 2.4 MHz.The Saturn microprocessor is a hybrid 64-bit CPU, but it acts like a 4-bit processor because it presents nibble-based data to programs and uses a nibble-based addressing system. The screen resolution is a 131 by 64 pixel display, and the communication ports are either 4-pin RS-232 or infrared ports. The CPU clock frequency is 3.68-4 MHz. It has an RPN entry mode.The HP48 model number series support a stack-based programming language, which adds the concepts of lists and functions to stack-based programming. This allows you to pass unevaluated code by leaving it on the stack. Its system emulators include Emu48 software for Windows, X48 for Mac OS X, and Droid48 for Android OS.Speed through your calculations with a built-in equation library that offers more than 300 formulas and scientific constants that will solve your problems for you. If you are unable to find the program you're searching for, you can also create and store your own. It has the ability to be completely programmable. Powerrful solver and large display, little complicated operation.
The HP calculators are generally outstanding. This HP 48G series are the last one with Saturn chip and pure RPN graphing calculator. Compare to the other machines on the same generation even now, TVM solver has an amortization, a lot of built in equation for solving many genres of the different fields. However I don't like the way of showing an answer really simple such as 3 x 1/3 = 0.9999.... I wonder what was happened on the library which used to be very accurate and appropriate. But for the use with the programmes, this allows longer label names and easy to call the functions defined. And I/O is better than other HP calculators to save the current condition or to load the program or solve equations ready-to-run. I like this calculator as a desktop machine, I need a big pocket to bring this on the motorcycle.Read full review

Excellent RPN calculator and an excellent value...
I have an old HP48SX that I use at home; I've had it for 25 years and it still works fine. I bought this 48G to use at work so I don't have to carry the old one back and forth. For 99.8% of any engineer's or scientist's needs, this is the only calculator to consider. It might seem outdated, but the positive feedback on the button presses make this far better than the newer HP49G and HP50G calculators IMO, and it is plenty fast enough and capable enough for everything I've needed as a working electrical engineer. 32KB of memory may seem like a joke in today's terms, but really... who's going to write more than a simple program on their calculator anyway - they are going to use Python or Matlab or some other PC-based tool for any real programming. This suites the needs of a real RPN calculator with rugged durability, reliability, positive feedback on key presses, and is plenty fast.Read full review

Replaced a unit I had for 25 years
I've had one of these for over 25 years, It finally died, and they no longer make this model, so I was happy to find it. I was so used to the other one that I didn't want a newer model. My old one always had a flaw, and it was this. When you first turned it on and put in your first key stroke it wouldn't record it on the screen so you had to do it a second time. This replacement does not have the problem. Very satisfied with it.

A fun toy for the real nerdy enginner
This is a wonderful calculator and does amazing calcuations for those with an engineering or science background. Complex numbers are a breeze sucj as (1 +3i) * (1-4i) or oin polar form ( 1 30 ) / (2 -45). The calcuator supports entry and results in polar or recatangular forms and it is easy to change from one disply to the other. The stacj gets a little getting used to but in you want you can go for algegraic entry. Heaps to keep the nerdy type person occupied. These older calculator develop keyboard intermittant fault which needs a little pressure between the upper 'c' and 'd' buttons to fix. annoying but once you know about it they work ok.

Great example of a classic calculator.
The HP48 is my personal calculator of choice. The RPN takes a bit to get used to, but it grows on you, and lets the calculator handle calculations of any length. The RPL lets you write your own code to automate repeated tasks, and writing a program is often as easy as typing in the commands you would otherwise have run manually. I will concede that while the screen is a higher resolution than a Ti84, and is capable of drawing 3D plots, the interface to the graphing functions isn't as user friendly as the one on its Ti relatives, and even at the higher resolution, making out details for the 3d plots isn't very easy on a black and white screen, so if you are going to be using it more for graphing than calculating, then perhaps a 83 or 84 from Ti might be a better choice. As a calculator though, I would highly recommend.Read full review
