A flange nut is a nut that has a wide flange at one end that acts as an integrated, non-spinning washer. These nuts have serrations on the integrated washer giving it a "locking" characteristic. This serves to distribute the pressure of the nut over the part being secured, reducing the chance of damage to the part and making it less likely to loosen as a result of an uneven fastening surface.

Stainless steel flange nuts have a wide flange under the hex that acts as a washer which helps to evenly distribute pressure over the parts being secured as to not cause damage and making it less likely to loosen this type of lock nut uses displacement to provide a tight fit and requires slightly less torque when installing
The serrations on the flange are positioned at an angle that bites into the material being fastened against to provent the nut from turning loose but will scratch or mar a surface so if using on a painted or coated surface and moisture could be an issue it is best to choose a fastener that will not run the risk of removing the coating and exposing the mating surface to the possibility oof corrosion
