remote control via gsm phone

I am aware that there are many switches that can be called and activated via gsm phone, I'm not looking for a switch but a means to place a phone call with my computer to a remote cell phone and send commands from my computer to a controller via the phone call. I'm not necessarily asking for the exact solution, but just getting pointed in the right direction would help. If anyone knows any information on what I need to do or where to find information that could assist me, that would be great! Answers like "Don't waste your time" or "It pretty much can't be done" are neither true, nor helpful so if thats what you had in mind, don't bother. Thanks everyone!
